Can international students buy a car in the US

International students can buy a car in the US. There is no law stopping them, but it takes more paperwork, proof of identity, and sometimes a larger upfront payment because credit history is usually thin.

What You Need to Buy a Car

  • Passport and visa: These verify identity and legal entry.
  • I‑20 or DS‑2019: Shows student status and school details.
  • US address: Needed for registration and insurance.
  • Driver’s license: Most states require a local license; some allow purchase before you get it, but insurance will be higher.
  • SSN or ITIN: Helpful for financing; not required for paying in full.

Payment and Financing

  • Cash or debit from a US bank: Easiest option. Dealers accept wire transfers or cashier’s checks if daily card limits are too low.
  • Financing through a dealer: Possible but harder without credit history. Expect higher interest or a larger down payment.
  • Financing through student-focused lenders: Some fintechs work with thin-credit borrowers and accept visa documents instead of long credit history.

Insurance Requirements

Every state requires liability insurance before driving. Students with limited US driving history often pay higher rates. Providing prior driving records from home country can sometimes reduce costs.

Registration and Title

  • DMV registration: Needed to legally operate the car. You will receive a license plate.
  • Title: Legal proof of ownership. Keep it safe; you need it if you sell the car or leave the US.
  • Address stability: DMV mail is important. If housing changes often, use a reliable address.

Common Problems to Avoid

  • Overpaying at dealerships: International students are often targeted with add-ons. Decline extras unless necessary.
  • Buying without inspection: For used cars, pay for a pre-purchase inspection to avoid hidden repair costs.
  • Driving without insurance: Penalties are serious and can affect visa status if accidents occur.
  • Not budgeting for ongoing costs: Fuel, maintenance, parking, tolls, and registration renewals add up quickly.
