Can international students work legally in the US

Yes, international students in the US can work legally, but the rules are strict, the hours are limited, and every type of job requires specific authorization. Working without authorization can harm your visa record, so it’s important to follow these rules exactly.

Types of Legal Work for F1 Students

F1 is the standard student visa. Work options depend on where the job is and whether it is related to your studies.

  • On‑campus work: Allowed automatically. No special application. Jobs must be inside the campus or directly connected to the school (library, dining, bookstore, labs, campus offices). Limited to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. Full‑time allowed during official breaks.
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Off‑campus work that is part of your academic program. Usually an internship or practical training tied to your major. Requires authorization from your school’s international office before you start. Must appear on your I‑20. Can be paid or unpaid.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): Off‑campus work after finishing your program or sometimes during the program. Must be directly related to your major. Requires USCIS approval and an EAD card. Most students get up to 12 months; STEM majors can get an additional 24 months.
  • Severe Economic Hardship: Off‑campus work allowed only if you face unexpected financial problems beyond your control. Requires USCIS approval. Not common and takes time to process.

Common Rules Students Often Miss

  • No freelancing or gig work: Driving apps, delivery apps, online gig platforms, tutoring for cash, or any job where you’re considered self‑employed are not allowed.
  • No working before authorization starts: Even one early shift is a violation.
  • Social Security Number (SSN): You need a job offer to apply. It is not permission to work; it is only a tax ID.
  • Taxes: Even with limited hours, students must file annual tax forms. Employers will ask for I‑9 documents to verify your status.

How to Stay Safe and Legal

  • Always check with your school’s international office before accepting any job.
  • Keep copies of all approvals: I‑20 with CPT, EAD for OPT, job offer letters.
  • Stop work immediately if your authorization ends or your program status changes.
