Do international students need an SSN to open a bank account

International students do not need an SSN to open most basic bank accounts in the US. Some banks ask for it, but they can legally open accounts for people without one as long as other ID is provided.

What banks actually require

Banks must verify your identity because of federal rules. An SSN is one option, but not the only one. Without an SSN, banks usually accept a combination of the following:

  • Passport: Your main identification document.
  • Visa and I-94: Shows your legal entry and status.
  • I-20 or DS-2019: Confirms you are an active international student.
  • US address: Can be dorm, temporary housing, or a friend’s address if allowed.
  • ITIN (if you have one): Not required unless the bank specifically asks. An ITIN is a tax ID for people who do not qualify for an SSN.

Why some banks still ask for an SSN

Some large banks design their online forms around US citizens, so the system tries to force an SSN field. In a branch, staff can override this. A few banks simply choose not to accept customers without an SSN because it requires extra paperwork on their side.

Bank types that are easiest for students without an SSN

  • Major banks with international student policies: Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo often open accounts with only a passport and I-20 when done in person.
  • Credit unions near universities: They are used to students and usually accept passports plus school documents.
  • International student–focused banks or fintechs: Some allow online signup using only a passport and I-20.

Important tips

  • Go in person: Staff can bypass the SSN requirement that appears online.
  • Bring all documents you have: Even if not needed, it helps avoid delays.
  • Do not panic if asked for an SSN: Just say you are an international student and do not have one yet. Staff deal with this daily.
  • If a bank refuses: It is a policy choice, not a legal rule. Try another branch or another bank.
