  • Mandatory fees: USD 1,000–3,000 for campus services, labs, transport, and technology.
  • Health insurance: USD 1,500–3,000 per year. Required for international students; you cannot skip it.
  • Housing: On-campus ranges from USD 8,000–15,000. Off-campus often USD 700–1,500 per month depending on city. Big cities like New York or Boston sit at the high end.

  • Books and supplies: Typically USD 800–1,500 yearly. Engineering and art programs tend to be more expensive.
  • Personal expenses: About USD 2,000–4,000 for phone plans, transport, clothing, and daily costs.

Important notes that affect cost

  • Scholarships: Available but competitive. Most aid is merit-based; need-based aid exists mainly at a few private universities.
  • On-campus work: Allowed up to 20 hours per week, but it will not cover tuition. It usually helps with personal expenses only.
  • Program length: Bachelor’s programs are four years; Master’s programs usually 1–2 years. Multiply the annual cost accordingly.
  • Location differences: Midwest and South tend to be cheaper; East and West Coast cities cost significantly more.

Overall, plan for a minimum of USD 40,000 per year and adjust based on the university type and city.
