Online class limits for international students in the US

3 min read · Written for international students in the U.S.

International students on F1 visas in the US can take only one online class per semester, and that class can count for no more than 3 credits, unless the school requires online coursework for everyone. You must stay in full-time enrollment and the rest of your required credits must be in in‑person or hybrid classes that require physical attendance.

What “online class limit” really means

US immigration rules require F1 students to be in classes that need regular, in‑person attendance. An online class is a course where you can complete all work without physically going to campus. A hybrid class is different: it has some online work but still requires scheduled in‑person meetings. Hybrid classes count as in‑person for immigration.

The core rule: Only one online class (up to 3 credits) can count toward the full‑time course load each semester. If you take more than one online class, the extra ones simply cannot count toward the full‑time requirement. If you fall below full‑time with in‑person credits, your SEVIS record can be terminated.

Typical full‑time requirements

  • Undergraduate students: Usually 12 credits per semester. At least 9 must be in‑person or hybrid.
  • Graduate students: Usually 9 credits per semester, or what the program defines as full‑time. Only 3 of those credits can be fully online.
  • Language programs: Almost always require all classes to be in‑person.

When more online classes are allowed

  • If the degree program itself is officially online-hybrid for everyone: The school must confirm this, and it must meet DHS rules. Not common.
  • If it is your final semester: You may take fewer credits, but still only 1 online class can count. If you need only one class to graduate, it cannot be fully online unless you also take an in‑person class.
  • During official government policy exceptions: For example, COVID‑era flexibility. These are rare and temporary.

Practical risks students run into

  • Assuming hybrid means online: Always check the class schedule for required meetings.
  • Advisors approving a schedule that violates visa rules: Immigration rules override academic advising mistakes.
  • Switching a class to online mid-semester: If the professor changes the format, talk to your international office immediately.

What to do before you register

  • Confirm which courses your school labels as online, hybrid, or in‑person.
  • Make sure all but one required class has regular physical attendance.
  • Get schedule approval from your international student office before the add/drop deadline.
