Can Zelle use email instead of phone

Yes. Zelle can use an email address instead of a phone number. When a sender uses an email, Zelle routes the payment to the account that the recipient has registered with that email. If the recipient hasn’t registered that email with Zelle, they get an invite to enroll and claim the money.

How to send using an email

  • Open your bank app or the Zelle app: Most major US banks have Zelle built into their mobile banking app; otherwise download the Zelle app and enroll.
  • Choose Send: Pick Send Money and enter the recipient’s email address (instead of a phone number).
  • Enter amount and note: Type the dollar amount and an optional memo, then confirm.
  • Complete verification: If not already verified, the bank/Zelle may send a code to the sender’s email/phone or require biometric/login confirmation.
  • Send: If the recipient is enrolled with that email, funds move to their bank account (usually within minutes). If not, they receive an email with instructions to enroll and claim the payment—typically the money is on hold for a limited time.

Key terms & practical tips

  • Registered with Zelle: Recipient must link that exact email to their bank/Zelle account to receive instantly.
  • Unregistered email: Triggers an invite; recipient must enroll to claim funds—otherwise payment may expire and return.
  • Bank app vs Zelle app: Using a bank app ties Zelle to that bank account automatically; Zelle app requires manually adding a debit card and verifying identity.
  • Limits and flags: Banks set daily/monthly limits and may flag unusual activity; check bank limits before sending large amounts.
  • Security: Use only trusted emails; Zelle payments are like cash—hard to reverse if sent to the wrong address.
