Does Zelle charge fees

Zelle does not charge fees to send or receive money. However, banks or credit unions can still charge fees related to your bank account (overdrafts, NSF, or specific account fees), so check the bank’s terms.

How Zelle is free and when fees can appear

Why Zelle itself is free: Zelle is a bank-to-bank instant payment service. The company and participating banks cover the processing; Zelle’s app and the bank apps that offer Zelle do not add a separate per-transfer fee.

  • Bank fees that can apply: Overdraft fees or NSF (non-sufficient funds) fees if the bank covers a payment without enough balance, returned-payment fees if a transfer bounces, or monthly/account maintenance fees the bank already charges.
  • Prepaid or nonbank accounts: Some prepaid cards or third-party services that allow Zelle enrollment may impose their own fees. Read that provider’s fee schedule.
  • Credit cards: Zelle does not use credit cards for funding. Attempting to route payments via a credit card isn’t supported and could lead to declined transactions or cash-advance rules if attempted through other means.

How fees happen in practice and what to do

  • Overdraft example: Send $200 via Zelle but have $50. If the bank covers it, an overdraft fee (e.g., $35) may be charged by the bank—even though Zelle charged nothing.
  • Returned transfer: If the receiving account info is wrong and the bank returns the transfer, the sending bank’s returned-item fee could apply.
  • Avoid surprises: Check the bank’s fee schedule, enroll through the bank’s app if possible, confirm available balance before sending, and don’t use Zelle for purchases from strangers (no buyer protection).
