Can international students get a US driver license

International students in the US can usually get a state driver license as long as they have valid immigration documents and proof of residence in that state.

What You Need to Know

Every state has its own rules, but the process is generally similar. A US driver license is often used not only for driving but also as an everyday ID, which helps with banking, travel inside the US, and some housing processes.

Basic Requirements (Applies in Most States)

  • Passport with visa: Shows lawful entry to the US.
  • I-20 or DS-2019: Documents student status. The DMV uses it to confirm you are legally allowed to stay.
  • I-94 record: An online record showing when you entered the US and your status (F-1 or J-1).
  • Proof of address: A document showing where you live in the state, such as a lease, utility bill, or a school letter confirming your on-campus residence.
  • Social Security Number (SSN) or a denial letter: If you don't qualify for an SSN, most states accept an official SSA denial letter instead.

How the Process Usually Works

  • Pass a written test: Covers driving rules. Most states provide free practice materials.
  • Take a vision test: Done at the DMV.
  • Get a learner permit: Allows practice driving with restrictions.
  • Take a road test: Demonstrates your driving ability in real traffic.
  • Receive your driver license: Often mailed within a few weeks. The expiration will match your I-20 or DS-2019 end date.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • Your license expires when your legal stay ends: If your I-20 or DS-2019 is extended, you may need to update the DMV record.
  • Some states require an appointment: Slots can be scarce, so booking early helps.
  • International licenses: Some states let you drive temporarily with your home-country license, but not for getting insurance or long-term driving.
  • Car insurance is required: You cannot legally drive without it, even if the DMV approves your license.

If You Recently Arrived

Most states require you to wait until your SEVIS record is active in the system, usually a few days after school check-in. If the DMV says your information cannot be verified, it usually means SEVIS updates have not synced yet.

In short, international students can get a US driver license, but paperwork and timing matter. With the right documents and a little planning, the process is straightforward in most states.
