How many hours international students can work during semesters

Most countries allow international students to work about 20 hours per week during the academic term.

What “20 hours per week during semesters” really means

In the major study‑destination countries, the rule is similar but not identical. Below is the practical meaning of the limit:

  • United States: Work is allowed only on‑campus during semesters, up to 20 hours per week. Off‑campus work needs special authorization (CPT or OPT).
  • Canada: Normally up to 20 hours per week off‑campus during semesters if enrolled full‑time and holding a valid study permit. Canada sometimes issues temporary rules, but they change often and must be checked each term.
  • United Kingdom: Usually 20 hours per week during term time for degree‑level students; the exact limit is printed on the visa sticker or BRP card. Some lower‑level courses have stricter limits.
  • Australia: 48 hours per fortnight during semesters (a fortnight is 14 days). This is effectively the same as 24 hours per week but counted over two weeks.

Key definitions you must understand

  • Term time / semester: The period when classes or required academic activities are running. Reading weeks usually count as term time.
  • Full‑time enrollment: Required to use work rights. Dropping below full‑time without permission can cancel work eligibility.
  • On‑campus vs. off‑campus: On‑campus jobs are within the university itself. Off‑campus means any external employer.
  • Breaks / holidays: Nearly all countries allow full‑time work during official school breaks, not during exam weeks unless the school marks them as breaks.

Common mistakes that cause visa trouble

  • Exceeding weekly limits: Governments count total hours across all jobs.
  • Working before the program start date: Not allowed unless the visa explicitly says so.
  • Misunderstanding “fortnight” or rounding hours: Immigration counts exact hours, not averages.

When unsure, the safest step is checking the specific wording on the visa document and confirming term dates with the university, because those two items decide the actual legal limit.
