What is OPT work authorization for international students

OPT is a temporary work permission that lets F‑1 international students work in the U.S. in jobs directly related to their major, usually for up to 12 months after finishing their program, if they apply and get an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS.

What OPT Really Is

OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a benefit of the F‑1 student visa. It allows paid or unpaid work, internships, or multiple jobs, as long as each one clearly links to the student’s field of study. OPT is not a work visa; it is temporary training permission meant to apply what was learned in school.

Who Can Use OPT

  • Most F‑1 students who completed at least one academic year in the U.S.
  • Bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students in any major.
  • STEM graduates can later request a 24‑month extension, but only after the standard 12‑month OPT is approved.

How OPT Works in Practice

  • When to apply: Up to 90 days before graduation and no later than 60 days after. Applying late delays the start date.
  • What you submit: A request through your school’s international office for a new I‑20 recommending OPT, then an online USCIS application with fee, photo, and documents.
  • When work can start: Only after the EAD card arrives and the approved start date has arrived.
  • Unemployment limit: No more than 90 days without qualifying work. Even unpaid internships can count if documented.
  • Job rules: Work must match your major. Hours can be part‑time or full‑time after graduation.

Common Real‑World Issues

  • Processing delays: USCIS timelines vary, so students often apply early to avoid gaps.
  • Travel risk: Traveling before receiving the EAD or without a job offer can lead to reentry problems.
  • Employer confusion: Some companies misunderstand OPT; showing the EAD and explaining it is temporary work permission usually resolves this.
  • Status maintenance: Students must report every job, address change, or unemployment period to their school’s SEVIS system.

In short, OPT lets F‑1 students legally gain U.S. work experience tied to what they studied, but the process has strict timelines, documentation steps, and employment rules that must be followed to keep status secure.
