How do international students receive money on PayPal in the US?

International students in the U.S. can receive money on PayPal once they create a U.S. PayPal account and fully verify it with the documents PayPal asks for. If those requirements are already met, the student can simply share their PayPal email with the sender, receive the funds instantly, and then move the money to a linked U.S. bank account.

How international students receive money on PayPal in the U.S.

An international student can receive money as soon as a U.S. PayPal account is set up and verified. PayPal does not require a Social Security Number for every student, but it always needs enough documents to confirm identity. After PayPal is satisfied with the documents, the student receives money simply by using the email address tied to the account.

  • Create a U.S. PayPal account: Use a U.S. address where school mail can reach you. This does not have to be a permanent address.
  • Provide identification: PayPal usually accepts a passport. Sometimes it also asks for proof of U.S. residence, like a dorm letter, bank statement, or rental agreement.
  • Link a U.S. bank account: This lets you withdraw money. Students usually open accounts at banks like Chase, Bank of America, or local credit unions using passport, I-20, and school ID.
  • Receive funds: The sender only needs your PayPal email. Money appears in your PayPal balance once processed.
  • Transfer to bank: You can move the money to your U.S. bank, usually within 1–3 business days. Instant transfer is possible with a small fee.

If all requirements are already met

  • Give the sender your PayPal email.
  • Check your PayPal balance once money arrives.
  • Withdraw to your connected U.S. bank account.

Important notes students often miss

  • No VPN during setup: PayPal may freeze accounts if location looks suspicious.
  • Name must match your passport and bank account: Even small spelling differences can delay verification.
  • Foreign PayPal accounts are separate: A PayPal made in your home country usually cannot be converted into a U.S. one.
  • Visa type does not block PayPal: PayPal only cares about confirming identity and address, not immigration status.

Once verification is complete, receiving money is fast and simple. Most issues come from mismatched names, missing documents, or using VPNs, so keeping everything consistent avoids problems.
