Payments shouldn’t be the hardest part of studying abroad
Learn how Rentaba supports students with payments, setup questions, and common roadblocks.
ExploreCash App is officially available only in the United States and the United Kingdom. People in these two countries can fully use the service — to send, receive, and request money. Cross-border payments between the U.S. and the U.K. are also supported. Cash App does not yet operate in other countries such as Canada, India, or any part of the European Union.
1. For users in the United States: You can open a Cash App account if you are a resident with a valid U.S. phone number and mailing address. To access all features, such as the Cash Card or direct deposit, you must verify your identity. This means entering your full legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). Non-citizens who have an SSN (for example, international students with work permission) can usually verify successfully. Without this verification, sending and receiving limits remain low, and certain features are disabled.
2. For users in the United Kingdom: You need a U.K. phone number and a valid local bank account to use Cash App. Verification requires your full name, date of birth, and address. There is no requirement for a National Insurance number. Some U.S.-specific features — like Cash Card or Bitcoin investing — are not yet available to U.K. users.
3. If you meet all requirements: Once your identity is verified and your bank account or debit card is linked, your Cash App should work normally. You can send or receive money instantly between U.S. users, between U.K. users, or across these two countries. Make sure the recipient is in the same region or a supported one — payments will fail if the other person’s Cash App account is registered in an unsupported country.
4. If you are outside the U.S. or U.K.: Cash App cannot be used or downloaded reliably. Even if you access it through a VPN or foreign app store, verification will likely fail because you cannot provide the required local details or phone number. Attempting to bypass region restrictions can result in frozen accounts or permanent blockages.
Summary: Cash App works completely only in the U.S. and the U.K., with limited cross-border use between them. If you already live in one of these countries, have a local phone number, a valid bank or debit card, and complete identity verification, you meet all other requirements and can use Cash App normally for safe, quick transfers.
