Can F1 students use Venmo

Yes, F1 students can use Venmo as long as they meet Venmo’s identity verification requirements. If you already have everything Venmo asks for, then you can use it normally.

Who can use Venmo and what F1 students need

Venmo itself does not block international students. The main rule is that every user must pass Venmo’s identity verification. For an F1 student, this usually means confirming both your identity and your legal presence in the United States. Here is what Venmo may ask for and what it means:

  • US phone number: Venmo requires a mobile number from a US carrier. Apps like Google Voice usually do not work. A prepaid SIM card from AT&T, T‑Mobile, or Verizon is fine.
  • US bank account or debit card: You need this to send and receive money. Bank accounts from major US banks or credit unions work. International cards usually get rejected.
  • Valid passport: This is used for identity verification if you do not have a US ID yet.
  • Visa information and immigration document: Venmo sometimes asks for your visa stamp, your I‑20, or your most recent entry document. This is normal for non‑citizens; it is how they confirm you are legally in the US.
  • SSN or ITIN: Venmo usually requests an SSN. Some students pass verification using only passport and visa documents, but that is not guaranteed. If you already have an SSN or ITIN, verification is easier.

If you already meet all requirements

  • You can create a Venmo account, link your US phone number, add your US bank account, and complete verification using your passport and SSN/ITIN.
  • Transfers to friends or landlords will work normally. The account should stay active as long as your documents are valid and you respond to any future verification checks.

If you do not have some documents yet

  • No SSN yet: Venmo may still try to verify you using your passport and visa information, but many F1 students are asked for an SSN later. If that happens and you cannot provide one, the account may be limited.
  • No US phone number: Get this first; Venmo will not work without it.
  • No US bank account: Open an account at a US bank or credit union. Digital‑only banks sometimes fail verification; traditional banks are safer.

Small but important warnings

  • Do not use VPNs with Venmo: It often triggers security reviews.
  • Use your real information: Any mismatch can freeze the account.
  • Keep your documents updated: If your passport or I‑20 expires, Venmo may ask for new copies.

In short, F1 students can use Venmo. The key is being able to pass identity verification with a US phone number, US bank account, and valid immigration documents.
