Can crypto be bought on Venmo

Yes, crypto can be bought on Venmo, as long as the account meets Venmo’s crypto requirements. If you already meet all requirements, you can buy it directly in the Venmo app with a few taps.

What Venmo Allows

Venmo lets users buy, sell, and hold a small set of cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. Everything happens inside the app. You do not need a separate wallet.

Requirements You Must Meet

  • Identity verification: Venmo must know who you are. This usually means entering legal name, address, date of birth, and the last four digits of an SSN. If you already verified your account before, you’re set.
  • US phone number: Venmo requires a US mobile number that can receive texts. Internet-based numbers usually fail.
  • US residence: Crypto services work only for users physically in the US with a US Venmo account.
  • Payment method that works: You can use your Venmo balance or a linked bank account/debit card. Credit cards cannot buy crypto on Venmo.

If You Already Meet All Requirements

  • Open Venmo and go to the Crypto section.
  • Select the coin you want.
  • Enter the amount in dollars.
  • Review the fee Venmo charges (it is shown before you confirm).
  • Confirm the purchase.

Important Limits and Small Warnings

  • You cannot send crypto out of Venmo to an external wallet. It stays inside Venmo’s system. You can only buy, sell, or transfer it to another Venmo user.
  • Crypto is not insured. Unlike a bank balance, it is not covered by FDIC insurance.
  • Your bank must allow crypto-related transactions. Some banks block them temporarily, so failed purchases are usually a bank issue, not Venmo’s.
  • If identity verification fails, Venmo may freeze buying or selling. This is common for new arrivals; usually uploading a clearer ID or matching your legal name fixes it.

Simple Bottom Line

You can buy crypto on Venmo if your account is verified, tied to a US phone number and address, and funded with a valid US payment method. Once those pieces are in place, the process is straightforward and takes less than a minute.
