Is crypto on Venmo available to foreigners

Crypto on Venmo is available to foreigners only if they successfully pass Venmo’s identity verification. If someone has all required documents, lives in the U.S., and passes the verification checks, then yes — Venmo allows them to buy, hold, and sell crypto.

Who can actually use crypto on Venmo

Venmo’s crypto feature is not tied to U.S. citizenship. It is tied to verification and legal presence in the U.S. That means a foreign student, worker, researcher, or visitor can use the crypto features if they:

  • Live in the U.S. Venmo must see a U.S. residential address, not a campus mailbox.
  • Have a working U.S. phone number that can receive SMS (no foreign numbers or internet-only apps).
  • Have a U.S. bank account or debit card linked to Venmo.
  • Pass ID verification: Venmo may request a passport, U.S. visa, I‑94, and sometimes SSN or ITIN. They do not always require an SSN, but the system may ask for it depending on risk checks.

If these conditions are met and the verification succeeds, Venmo unlocks crypto for that account. If verification fails or Venmo cannot confirm U.S. residency, the crypto section stays locked.

If someone already meets all requirements

  • Crypto should appear automatically under the main Venmo menu. No extra application is needed.
  • If it does not appear, they should confirm that their identity verification is fully completed in the app’s settings. Even one missing document can hide the crypto feature.
  • They must be physically located in the U.S. during setup. Using a VPN or being abroad can block the feature.
  • Once unlocked, they can buy, sell, hold, and send crypto inside Venmo. They cannot transfer it to external wallets.

Small warnings that matter

  • Identity checks can fail if the passport photo is blurry or the address on the document does not match the address entered in the app.
  • Venmo can freeze crypto functions if the account looks inconsistent, such as logging in from another country.
  • Crypto on Venmo is simple but limited. It is not suitable for serious investing.

In short: a foreigner can use Venmo crypto as long as Venmo can fully verify their identity and U.S. residence. Meeting all requirements makes the feature appear automatically.
