Documents needed to reenter the US on an F1 student visa

To reenter the US on an F1 visa, you need: a valid passport, a valid F1 visa stamp, your most recent I‑20 signed for travel within the last 12 months (6 months if on OPT), proof of ongoing enrollment or OPT status, and financial evidence if asked. If on OPT, you also need your EAD and job proof.

Essential documents

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date. Border officers check this first.
  • F1 visa stamp: Must be unexpired. If it is expired, you must renew it at a US embassy or consulate before travel, unless returning from Canada/Mexico under automatic revalidation rules.
  • Most recent I‑20 with a travel signature: Page 2 must have a travel endorsement from your school’s international office. It must be signed within:
    • 12 months for active students
    • 6 months if on OPT
  • Proof of enrollment: Usually a recent enrollment letter, transcript, or class schedule. Officers use this to confirm you still study in good standing.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements or sponsor letters showing you can cover tuition and living costs. Often not asked, but required if an officer wants confirmation.
  • SEVIS fee receipt: Helpful but usually not required once inside the program. Keep it anyway.

Extra items if on OPT

  • EAD card: Proves you are authorized to work.
  • Proof of employment: Offer letter or employment verification. If unemployed for long periods, reentry becomes risky.
  • I‑20 updated for OPT: Must show OPT approval and have a recent travel signature.

Situations to watch out for

  • Expired visa stamp: You cannot reenter unless renewed abroad. Automatic revalidation only works for short trips to Canada/Mexico and requires an otherwise valid status.
  • Passport about to expire: Even technically valid passports close to expiration may cause extra questioning.
  • Travel signature missing or old: This is one of the most common reasons students are stopped at the border. Get a fresh signature before leaving.

What officers usually ask

  • Your school, major, and next term plans
  • Proof you are still studying or working legally
  • Financial capability if they feel your previous documents are old
