Can international students withdraw PayPal money to a US bank account?

International students can withdraw PayPal money to a U.S. bank account as long as their PayPal account is fully verified and the bank account belongs to them.

How it works when all requirements are already met

If the student already has a verified PayPal account, a U.S. bank account in their own name, and identity confirmation completed, they can simply link the bank account in PayPal and transfer the money. Transfers usually take one to three business days.

What an international student actually needs

  • A U.S. PayPal account in their name: It must match the name on the bank account. Small spelling differences can trigger holds.
  • Identity verification: PayPal asks for a passport or U.S. ID. Sometimes it requests an SSN, but many international students can complete verification with a passport only. If PayPal later needs an SSN, it will clearly say so; until then, transfers may be limited.
  • A U.S. bank account: Any account from a major bank or a student-friendly one works. It must accept ACH transfers, which nearly all do.
  • A U.S. phone number: PayPal uses this for login and security checks. Without it, withdrawals may get blocked.

What can go wrong and how to avoid issues

  • Name mismatch: Use the exact same legal name on both PayPal and your bank account.
  • Unverified account: If transfers fail, upload identity documents in the Resolution Center. PayPal often rechecks new international accounts.
  • VPN problems: Avoid logging in with a VPN. PayPal may freeze the account for security reasons.
  • Bank not confirmed: PayPal will send two small deposits to your bank; enter them in PayPal to confirm the link.

What the withdrawal looks like step by step

  • Link your U.S. bank account in PayPal.
  • Confirm the two small deposits PayPal sends.
  • Go to Transfer Money and select your bank.
  • Choose standard transfer (free, slower) or instant (fee applies).

Once all the conditions above are met, international students can withdraw normally, and funds will arrive just like for any U.S. user.
