Can Venmo be opened outside the US

No. A Venmo account cannot be opened or used from outside the United States, even with a VPN. Venmo requires physical presence in the U.S. and U.S.‑based credentials.

Requirements and How It Works

To create and use Venmo, a person must actually be in the United States and have:

  • A U.S. phone number: It must be a real American mobile number that can receive texts. Virtual numbers, international SIMs, and VOIP services usually fail verification.
  • A U.S. bank account or debit card: Venmo checks these through U.S. banking networks. Foreign accounts, even in dollars, will not connect.
  • Location inside the U.S. when registering: The app checks IP location. VPNs often trigger security flags and can freeze the account.

Being outside the U.S. makes registration fail because Venmo cannot verify location, phone ownership, or banking details. Even if the app installs, transfers will not work and the account may be locked for “unusual activity.”

If all requirements are already met

If someone already has a U.S. phone number, a U.S. bank account, and is physically in the United States, setting up Venmo is straightforward:

  • Download the Venmo app from the U.S. App Store or Google Play.
  • Register using the U.S. phone number and confirm the text code.
  • Add the U.S. bank account or debit card for transfers.
  • Verify identity when prompted by uploading documents such as passport or U.S. ID; this is required for sending or receiving larger amounts.

After setup, transfers usually work instantly between users. Money sent to a bank normally takes one business day unless using the optional instant transfer with a small fee.

Small but important warnings

  • Do not use a VPN: Venmo may freeze the account because it cannot confirm the location.
  • Do not register with a temporary U.S. phone number: Losing that number later can block access to the account.
  • Venmo is only for personal use: It cannot replace official methods for rent or tuition unless the landlord specifically accepts it.

In short, Venmo works smoothly once someone is in the United States with real U.S. credentials. Outside the country, opening or using an account is not possible.
