Can Venmo be used for Bitcoin

Yes, Venmo can be used to buy, hold, and sell Bitcoin, but it cannot be used to send Bitcoin to other people or external wallets. Even if all requirements are already met, the functions stay the same: buy, hold, sell only inside Venmo.

What Venmo Allows

  • Buy Bitcoin inside the app: You can purchase Bitcoin using money from your Venmo balance, bank account, or debit card linked to Venmo.
  • Hold Bitcoin inside Venmo: Venmo keeps it in a custodial account, meaning Venmo controls the wallet, not you.
  • Sell Bitcoin back to dollars: You can convert it back to USD at any time, and the money returns to your Venmo balance.

What Venmo Does Not Allow

  • No sending Bitcoin to other Venmo users: Crypto cannot be transferred like regular Venmo payments.
  • No sending to external wallets: You cannot move Bitcoin to Coinbase, Binance, a hardware wallet, or any outside address.
  • No using Bitcoin to pay friends or rent: All crypto stays inside Venmo’s system until you sell it.

Requirements (and what happens if you already meet them)

  • Identity verification: Venmo requires ID before allowing crypto. If already verified, nothing extra is needed.
  • US account and phone number: Venmo crypto works only for users physically in the US with a US phone number. If you already have both, you can start immediately.
  • Updated app: Crypto tools appear only in the latest version. If everything is up to date, the Crypto tab should already be visible.

Practical Notes

  • Fees exist: Venmo charges a fee every time you buy or sell. It shows before you confirm the transaction.
  • Prices change fast: Crypto value moves constantly, so the amount you own may rise or fall.
  • Taxes apply: Selling Bitcoin for more than you bought it counts as taxable income in the US. Venmo sends tax forms if needed.
  • Account freezes: Using VPNs, mismatched documents, or logging in from unusual locations can trigger reviews. Keep your info consistent.

How to Buy If You Are Ready

  • Open the Venmo app and tap the Crypto section.
  • Select Bitcoin.
  • Enter the amount you want to buy.
  • Review the fee and confirm.

If all requirements are already met, you can complete the purchase in under a minute. Venmo keeps the Bitcoin for you until you choose to sell it.
