Can Venmo be used for business payments

Yes, Venmo can be used for business payments, but only if the person or business has a properly set up Venmo business profile. Personal profiles are not allowed to receive money for goods or services.

Using Venmo for Business Payments

If someone already meets all requirements and has a business profile, then yes — Venmo can be used immediately for business transactions.

Here is what “business payments” mean on Venmo: when money is exchanged for something like tutoring, art, rides, apartment cleaning, food delivery, selling items, or any service. Venmo requires these payments to go through a business profile so they can follow tax rules and fraud‑prevention rules.

  • Business profile: A separate profile linked to your personal Venmo. It shows your business name and lets customers pay you directly.
  • Fees: Venmo charges a small seller fee per transaction. This is automatic and cannot be turned off.
  • Taxes: Payments received through a business profile may be reported to the IRS, especially if they cross federal reporting thresholds.
  • Allowed use: You can use it for freelance work, small businesses, student side jobs, campus clubs selling merch, etc.
  • Not allowed: Using a personal profile for payments related to goods or services. This can trigger account reviews or freezes.

If You Already Meet All Requirements

If your identity is verified, your phone number is U.S.-based, and your Venmo account is in good standing, you can create a business profile in a few minutes:

  • Open Venmo and select “Create business profile”.
  • Choose business type: sole proprietor (most individuals) or a registered company.
  • Fill in basic info (legal name, business name, what you provide).
  • Link a bank account for transfers.

Once that is done, you can receive business payments safely. The payer will clearly see that they are paying a business, and your account stays compliant.

If you only need to pay a business, not receive money, you can pay any Venmo business profile directly with your personal account. There are no special steps.
