Can Venmo be used with eSIM numbers

Venmo works with eSIM phone numbers as long as the number is active, can receive SMS, and belongs to a supported country (usually a US mobile number).

Using Venmo with an eSIM Number

Yes, Venmo can be used with an eSIM number. Venmo does not care whether the number comes from a physical SIM or an eSIM. What matters is that the number is a real, active mobile number that can receive text messages for verification.

If a user already meets all other requirements, an eSIM number will work the same way as a physical SIM number.

What Venmo Needs From Your Phone Number

  • A US-based mobile number: Venmo requires a US phone number for account creation. Most eSIM plans from US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Mint, etc.) qualify. International eSIM numbers do not work.
  • Ability to receive SMS: Venmo sends a verification code by text. The eSIM must be active and able to get normal texts, not just data-only service.
  • One number per Venmo account: Venmo does not allow the same phone number to be linked to multiple active accounts.
  • No VOIP-only numbers: Google Voice, Skype, and most app-based numbers are rejected. Some eSIM apps also issue VOIP-style numbers; these won’t work.

If You Already Meet All Other Venmo Requirements

  • ID verification: If your identity is already verified, switching to an eSIM number normally causes no issues. Venmo may ask you to confirm the new number once.
  • Bank/credit card linked: These stay linked even if you change the phone number.
  • Account history: Your previous transactions and limits remain unchanged.

Common Issues With eSIM and How to Avoid Them

  • Data-only eSIM: Some cheap eSIM plans for travelers offer internet only, no SMS. Venmo will fail at verification. Make sure the plan includes a real US mobile number.
  • Number replaced during plan switch: Some carriers assign a new number when you change plans or carriers. Update your number in Venmo immediately to avoid login problems.
  • SMS blocked abroad: If you leave the US, some eSIM plans stop receiving SMS. Keep a backup verification method like email and device authentication.

In short: an eSIM number works perfectly with Venmo as long as it is a regular US mobile number that can receive texts. No functional difference from a physical SIM.
