Can Venmo be used with Google Voice

No, Venmo does not reliably work with a Google Voice number. Venmo requires a real mobile carrier number for identity checks and security codes. Even if a Google Voice number seems to work once, it usually fails later during verification or when Venmo runs security audits.

Why Google Voice Does Not Work

  • Venmo blocks VoIP numbers: Google Voice is a VoIP service, not a mobile carrier line. Venmo uses the number to confirm your identity and prevent fraud, and VoIP numbers do not meet their security requirements.
  • Verification texts often never arrive: Many students try to sign up with Google Voice and get stuck waiting for the code.
  • Accounts get flagged later: Even if the app accepts the number at first, Venmo may freeze or limit the account during later checks. Then it demands a carrier number before unlocking.

If You Already Meet All Other Requirements

Even with a U.S. bank account, SSN, or passport, Venmo still requires a real U.S. carrier phone number. This means a number from companies like T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Mint, Google Fi, or similar mobile carriers.

  • Prepaid plans are fine: Cheaper monthly plans from the big carriers work perfectly and count as real mobile numbers.
  • You can switch numbers later: If you start with a temporary carrier SIM and later get a permanent number, Venmo lets you update it in settings.
  • No need to keep the old SIM active: Once the number is verified inside Venmo, you only need to keep the current number active for future security codes.

What To Do Instead

  • Get a basic U.S. carrier SIM: Even a low-cost prepaid plan works. It gives you the kind of number Venmo accepts.
  • Verify the number immediately: Do it right after inserting the SIM. Venmo sends a text code to confirm.
  • Use the carrier number permanently with Venmo: Do not switch back to Google Voice for this app.

Extra Notes That Prevent Future Problems

  • Keep the phone bill paid: If the number is shut off, you may lose access to security codes and be locked out of Venmo.
  • Do not use VPNs while verifying: VPNs can trigger security warnings and block logins.
  • Be consistent: Keep the same phone, number, and device location when accessing Venmo. Sudden changes sometimes trigger identity checks.

In short: Google Voice looks convenient, but Venmo does not accept it. A real mobile carrier number is the safe, stable option.
