A US phone number is required. Venmo will not let someone finish creating an account or keep using it long‑term without a mobile number from a US carrier that can receive regular SMS texts.

Why Venmo requires a US phone number

Venmo uses the phone number as a core part of identity verification. The system sends security codes by SMS, and those codes cannot be delivered to international numbers or app-based numbers that do not belong to a US carrier. This is why a real, active US mobile number is required even if all other requirements are already met.

• The number must be from a US carrier: Examples include AT&T, T‑Mobile, Verizon, Mint, Google Fi (US version). International numbers, roaming numbers, or VoIP-only numbers often fail.
• The phone must be able to receive standard SMS texts: Verification codes cannot be delivered through WhatsApp, iMessage, or data-only apps.
• You can use prepaid SIM cards: As long as they come from a US carrier and receive SMS normally, they work.

If someone already meets all other requirements

Even with a US bank account, SSN, US IP address, and US billing address, the account will still stop at verification until a US phone number is added. Venmo sometimes allows account creation with a non‑US number, but the account becomes unusable when identity verification is triggered. This is normal and not a sign of a problem.

• Once a US number is added: Verification codes will start working, transfers will unlock, and identity checks can be completed normally.
• If switching from a temporary number: Venmo may send a confirmation text to both the old and new numbers. If the old number is no longer active, support can manually switch it after confirming identity.
