Can Zelle requests expire

Yes. Zelle money requests can expire or be canceled, but how and when depends on the bank or app.

How expiration works

Behavior varies by provider: Zelle is a network used inside many bank apps and the standalone Zelle app. There is no single universal rule—some banks automatically expire unpaid requests after a set period (commonly within 7–14 days), some leave requests pending indefinitely until canceled or paid, and others require the recipient to enroll to complete a request before it times out. Expiration is a rule applied by the sending or receiving bank, not a network-level immutable law.

What “expire” means and common outcomes

  • Expired = request is no longer active: The request disappears or changes state to “expired”/“canceled” and the requester cannot collect that pending request anymore.
  • Pending: If not expired, the request remains pending until paid, canceled by the requester, or acted on by the recipient.
  • Unenrolled recipient: If the receiver isn’t enrolled, they’ll get instructions to enroll; many banks will auto-expire if enrollment/response doesn’t happen within the bank’s timeframe.
  • Security flags: Banks may cancel requests that trigger fraud or limit rules.

Practical steps to check or fix a request

  • Open your bank or Zelle app → Activity/Requests: Look for “pending,” “canceled,” or “expired.”
  • Cancel a pending request: Most apps let the requester cancel; the recipient can’t cancel a request but can ignore it.
  • Resend if expired: Create a new request or ask recipient to enroll and send payment.
  • If paid in error: Contact the bank immediately—Zelle transfers are usually final and may be hard to reverse.
  • Worried about scams: Do not pay unexpected requests; verify identity and contact the sender outside the app before sending money.
