Can Cash App be used without SSN
3 min read · Cash App FAQ for students in the U.S.
You can create and use Cash App without a Social Security Number (SSN) at first, but the account will be very limited. Without providing an SSN, you can only send or receive small amounts of money — up to about $250 in total sent per week and $1,000 received per month. To increase or remove those limits, Cash App will require your SSN and some form of identification.
How it works without SSN
When someone signs up for Cash App, the app allows basic use right away. This is sometimes called a “limited” or “unverified” account. It only needs a U.S. phone number, email address, and sometimes a debit card. However, Cash App’s financial institution must verify who users are under federal law, which involves confirming identity for anti-fraud and anti–money laundering reasons. That’s where the SSN requirement appears.
If you try to send or receive money beyond the allowed limit, Cash App will stop the transaction and ask to verify your account. The verification process normally asks for:
- Full Legal Name: The exact name on your identification document.
- Date of Birth: Must show you are at least 18 years old.
- Social Security Number (SSN): Required for U.S. citizens and most residents.
- Photo ID: Sometimes requested if automated checks fail, such as a driver’s license or passport.
For people who already meet all requirements
If you already have a valid SSN, a U.S. address, and a bank account or debit card, you can complete verification in the app. After verification, you become a “verified user.” Verified Cash App users can:
- Send up to roughly $7,500 per week or more (limits can change over time).
- Receive unlimited funds.
- Use direct deposit (have paychecks sent to Cash App).
- Buy and sell Bitcoin or stocks if desired.
If you do not have an SSN
Noncitizens and new international students usually don’t have an SSN immediately. Cash App does not currently allow full verification with only a passport or visa. Some users have tried entering Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs), but verification sometimes fails because the system expects an SSN format. If you do not yet have an SSN, expect to stay within the low limits until you obtain one.
This means it’s fine to split a dinner bill or repay a friend a few dollars, but not suitable for paying rent, tuition, or large expenses. Once an SSN is issued by the Social Security Administration, you can update your profile and verify fully.
Practical advice
- Keep transactions small until your identity can be verified properly.
- Use your legal name and correct date of birth during setup to avoid account holds later.
- Do not use a VPN that hides your location when verifying; it can trigger security flags.
- Be patient: if verification fails, wait 24 hours before trying again and use clear ID photos.
In summary, yes, Cash App works without an SSN but only for minor use. To unlock full functionality — higher limits, direct deposit, investing, or reliable transfers — an SSN and formal verification are required.
