Can international students get a Cash App card

Yes, an international student can get a Cash App Card, but only if they already meet the same identification and residency requirements as any U.S. adult user—mainly having a valid Social Security Number (SSN) and proof of identity that matches Cash App’s verification system. Without those, Cash App can still be used in a limited way, but the physical Cash App Card will not be available.

What Cash App requires for a card

  • Legal residency in the U.S.: Cash App’s services are currently meant for people living in the United States with a U.S. mailing address.
  • Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to order the card in your name.
  • Social Security Number (SSN): This is the main barrier for most international students. Cash App uses it to verify your identity under U.S. banking regulations. A visa or passport number cannot be used instead.
  • Verified account: You’ll need to complete the in-app verification process—submitting your legal name, date of birth, SSN, and sometimes a photo ID before the Card feature becomes available.

If you already meet all requirements

If you are an international student who already has an SSN (for example, from on-campus work authorization), a U.S. address, and a verified Cash App account, then you can order and use a Cash App Card just like any other user. It will arrive by mail, and you can use it for both physical and online purchases wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. You can also connect it to Apple Pay or Google Pay if needed.

Important notes

  • ITIN doesn’t work: Cash App does not currently accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. They only verify with SSN.
  • VPN and foreign phone numbers: Avoid signing up while using a VPN or a non-U.S. phone number. These can cause account freezes or failed verifications.
  • Proof of address: Use a consistent U.S. address tied to your banking or school records; mismatched addresses may delay verification.
  • Be honest on forms: Any false details can permanently block the account and make it hard to use future financial services in the U.S.

If you don’t yet qualify

You can still use Cash App to receive and send money within the U.S. using your email or phone number, but without an SSN the account stays “unverified.” That means no Cash App Card, no direct deposit, and lower transaction limits. As soon as you receive an SSN, you can update your profile and reverify your account to unlock all features legitimately.
