Can non US citizens buy crypto on Cash App

Non‑U.S. citizens can only buy, sell, or transfer Bitcoin on Cash App if they fully meet Cash App’s identity verification requirements and are legally present in the U.S. Those requirements include having a legitimate Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), a U.S.‑issued ID (like a driver’s license or state ID), and a working U.S. address and phone number. Without these, Cash App will not let you use the Bitcoin features at all.

What Cash App Requires for Crypto

  • Legal presence and age: You must be at least 18 years old and physically located in the United States. Cash App’s cryptocurrency service is not offered to users outside U.S. territories.
  • Verified identity: You must pass “Know Your Customer” checks. This process needs your full legal name, date of birth, and SSN or ITIN. If you only have a passport or foreign ID, Cash App will not accept it for crypto verification.
  • U.S. funding source: You’ll need a U.S. bank account or debit card linked for buying Bitcoin. International cards or accounts usually fail verification.
  • Domestic device settings: Using VPNs, foreign SIM cards, or non‑U.S. app stores can trigger fraud alerts and block your Bitcoin tab even if you meet other conditions.

If You Already Meet All These Requirements

Once all identity checks are approved and your Cash App shows the “Bitcoin” tab, you can buy, sell, send, or receive Bitcoin directly. Your Bitcoin balance is held inside Cash App but can be transferred to an external wallet if you verify further. Purchase limits depend on your account level, and increased limits may require additional verification or transaction history.

Cash App currently supports only Bitcoin (BTC), no other cryptocurrencies. When you buy, the app converts U.S. dollars from your balance or linked bank account into Bitcoin using the current market rate plus a small service fee. Sales reverse that process, converting Bitcoin back to dollars.

Important Notes and Small Warnings

  • Temporary visas: If your SSN or ITIN status changes—like after a visa ends—Cash App might ask you to reverify your identity. Failing to do so can freeze your Bitcoin features.
  • Residency checks: Changing your U.S. address to a non‑U.S. one or logging in from abroad can disable the Bitcoin tab temporarily.
  • Security: Keep the same U.S. phone number and device attached to your Cash App for verification codes. Losing access can delay your ability to move or sell Bitcoin.

In short, only verified users with U.S. presence and documentation can use Cash App for crypto. International students who have an SSN or ITIN and a valid U.S. ID can trade Bitcoin normally within the app; everyone else will see the Bitcoin option locked or unavailable.
