Does Cash App accept prepaid cards

Cash App accepts some prepaid cards that are issued by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover, but they can only be used to send money or add funds. Cash App does not allow using prepaid cards to deposit funds back onto the card or withdraw money from it.

Details and Explanation

Cash App is designed primarily for use with a regular bank account or a debit card linked to a checking account. When people try linking prepaid cards (often called reloadable or gift cards), Cash App’s system checks the type of card. If it’s an acceptable network card (Visa, MasterCard, etc.), it might connect successfully, but it will only allow one-way use — you can send money or pay someone, but you cannot receive payments onto that card. Most prepaid cards do not have a linked bank routing number that Cash App can use to complete full transactions both ways.

If the user already meets all requirements — meaning their Cash App is verified, they have a valid identity check, and they are located in the U.S. — the rule is still the same. Prepaid cards are limited. To have full access (including cashing out, receiving direct deposits, or withdrawing funds), a bank account or debit card linked to a traditional bank is necessary.

  • Linking a prepaid card: Some prepaid cards from major networks may link successfully, but not all cards will. For example, government-issued benefit cards (e.g., unemployment, tax refund cards) and most foreign prepaid cards are not supported.
  • Receiving money: You cannot transfer funds from Cash App back to a prepaid card balance. That means if someone pays you, you need a linked bank account or debit card to withdraw it.
  • Verification: When a Cash App account isn’t verified with full personal details (name, date of birth, last 4 digits of SSN), many cards – including prepaid ones – can fail to connect or get limited automatically.
  • Adding funds: You may use the prepaid card to add money to your Cash App balance, but only up to the card’s available balance and according to the card issuer’s rules.
  • International cards: Cash App only operates in the United States and the United Kingdom. Prepaid cards that are not issued in these countries, or that require a foreign billing address, will not work at all.

For reliable everyday use — paying rent, receiving salary, or sending money to friends — it’s better to link a U.S. checking account or a debit card from a well-known bank or credit union. These connections rarely fail verification and allow full functionality. Prepaid cards can be a temporary fix but not a long-term solution within Cash App.
